You visit someone's profile, and Instagram displays "User not found," or the page simply states: "Sorry, this page isn't available." Has this person blocked you? Have they deleted their account? Or is it an Instagram bug?
Instagram doesn't specify which one it is. But, in most cases, you can figure it out within a few minutes.
What "User not found" can mean
| Reason | Can others find them? | Can you see their old comments? |
|---|---|---|
| They blocked you | Yes | Name shows but often won't open |
| They changed their username | Yes, under the new name | Yes, under the new name |
| They deactivated their account | No | No, hidden while deactivated |
| They deleted their account | No | No, gone for good |
| Instagram suspended or banned them | No | No |
| A temporary glitch | Yes | Yes |
How to tell which one it is
Perform these checks in order.
1. Check the username
A simple typo is the most common cause. Try searching for the person by their name rather than their username, or open a link from a previous message.
2. Has the person changed their username?
If you follow each other, check your "Following" or "Followers" list and look for their profile picture. Past private conversations (DMs) and mentions are automatically updated to reflect the new username.
3. Check if you have been blocked
- Find one of their comments or an old private conversation and tap on their name. If their profile does not open, yet the comment is still visible, it is highly likely that you have been blocked.
- Ask a friend to search for the account. If they can see it but you cannot, you have likely been blocked.
- Try accessing instagram.com using an incognito/private browsing window. Public profiles can sometimes be viewed without being logged in. If the profile appears, it means it still exists and you have likely been blocked.
4. Is the account deactivated or deleted?
If no one can find the account, it has been deactivated, deleted, or suspended. From the outside, these situations look the same. The only difference lies in the duration:
- Deactivated accounts can reappear as soon as the owner logs back in.
- Deleted accounts are lost permanently.
- Suspended accounts may be restored if the owner successfully appeals the suspension.
If the account reappears after a few days or weeks, it means it had been deactivated or suspended.
5. Rule out a potential technical bug
If multiple profiles fail to appear, not just one, the issue likely lies with Instagram. Update the app, switch from Wi-Fi to mobile data (or vice versa), and try again later.
Why they disappeared from your followers too
When someone blocks you, or deactivates or deletes their account, they also disappear from your lists of followers and the accounts you follow. This is why your follower count may decrease, even if no one has actively "unfollowed" your account. Why is my Instagram follower count dropping? covers every reason.
What to do next
- If you think you've been blocked: accept it. Creating new accounts to bypass a block may violate Instagram's rules.
- If the account has been deactivated: be patient. It might be reactivated later.
- If you need to reach the person: use another method of contact, such as a phone call or email.
