Following 800 accounts but only getting followed back by 400 of them? You're not imagining it — most active Instagram users follow more people than follow them back. The question isn't whether this is happening, it's whether it's worth doing anything about it.

This guide covers how to actually find that list — the accounts you follow that don't follow you back — without giving any app your password.

Why this list matters (and when it doesn't)

There are two genuinely useful reasons to check this:

  • Cleaning up your feed — if you're following 2,000 accounts and only seeing posts from a fraction of them, trimming the list that isn't reciprocal can make your feed more relevant
  • Understanding your ratio — for creators, a very lopsided following-to-followers ratio can look unusual to people checking out your profile

What it's not useful for is taking it personally. Plenty of accounts you follow — brands, public figures, news sources — were never going to follow back, and that's completely normal.

Instagram lets every user download their full account data, including exact lists of followers and following, as JSON files. This is the cleanest way to get this list because it comes straight from Instagram — no scraping, no third-party access to your account.

Step 1: Request your data export

  • Instagram app → Settings → Your Activity → Download Your Information
  • Choose JSON format
  • Select Followers and following
  • Request the download

Step 2: Open the right files

Once the zip arrives by email and you extract it, head to the followers_and_following folder. You need both:

  • following.json — everyone you follow
  • followers_1.json — everyone who follows you
The logic is simple

Anyone in your following.json file who does NOT appear in followers_1.json is someone who doesn't follow you back.

A note on "follow/unfollow" growth tactics

Some growth accounts recommend mass-following strangers, waiting for a follow-back, then unfollowing them — sometimes using bots to automate it. This violates Instagram's terms of service and can get an account rate-limited or temporarily restricted.
