Checking whether one person follows you takes about two seconds. Checking a hundred is nearly impossible. Here are the four methods, roughly in order of how many accounts you're trying to verify.

Method 1: Check the Following button on their profile

The quickest check for a single account, and the one most people miss.

Open their profile and look at the buttons. If the account follows you, Instagram displays a Follows you label directly under their username, a small grey tag next to the bio. That label is definitive. If it's there, they follow you.

If it's absent, they don't follow you. That's it: one look, no scrolling.

One caveat: the label sometimes takes a moment to load on slow connections, so if the profile is still rendering, give it a second before concluding anything.

Method 2: Search your own followers list

Useful when you want to confirm rather than glance.

  1. Go to your profile and tap your Followers count
  2. Tap the search bar at the top
  3. Type their username

If they appear, they follow you. If the list comes back empty, they don't. Searching the list is far more reliable than scrolling it; Instagram's follower list ordering is not alphabetical and not chronological in any way you can predict.

Method 3: Check whether they appear in your Stories viewer list

Indirect, but sometimes informative. If your account is private and someone's viewing your Stories, they must be an approved follower. On a public account this proves nothing anyone can view a public Story without following you.

Treat this as a hint, not an answer.

Method 4: Compare your full lists at once

Everything above works for one or two accounts. It doesn't scale. If you follow 900 people and want to know which of them follow you back, tapping through 900 profiles isn't a plan.

Instagram deliberately doesn't offer this view. No screen in the app shows "accounts I follow who don't follow me back", and there never has been.

But you can get it from your own data:

  1. Request your Instagram data export. Settings → Your Activity → Download Your Information → Request a download. Choose JSON format. Instagram emails a link within a few hours. Full walkthrough: how to download your Instagram data.
  2. Find the two files you need. Unzip the download and open the followers_and_following folder. You want followers_1.json and following.json, nothing else. If you're curious what's inside them, we broke it down in followers_1.json and following.json explained.
  3. Upload them in Unfollow Finder. Drop both files into Unfollow Finder, and it compares them instantly.

You get three lists:

  • Mutuals : you follow each other
  • Not following back : you follow them, they don't follow you
  • Unfollowers : people who followed you and don't anymore

The comparison runs in your browser. The files never upload anywhere, there's no account to create, and you never type an Instagram password.

Why "who doesn't follow me back" tools ask for a login (and why they shouldn't)

If you've searched this before, you've seen a lot of sites offering to check who doesn't follow you back "online, free" right after asking you to sign in with Instagram.

They ask because logging in as you is the only way to read your lists off Instagram's servers. Once they have those credentials, the account is as much theirs as yours, and the risk doesn't end when you close the tab. Instagram also treats third-party login-and-scrape as a terms violation, so the downside can include an action block or restriction on your own account.

The asymmetry nobody mentions

Instagram tells you about the gains and stays silent on the losses. That's the whole reason unfollow trackers exist.

Does Instagram tell you when someone follows you?

Yes, if notifications are on. New follows appear in your Activity feed under Follows, and as a push notification if you've enabled them.

It does not notify you when someone unfollows. To see the losses, you need a before-and-after comparison of your own data, which is what an unfollow detector does.
