Short answer: no. Instagram does not send a notification to someone when you unfollow them, and it doesn't notify you when someone unfollows you either. There's no popup, no alert, no email — unfollowing is a silent action on both sides.
That said, there are a few related things people often confuse with an "unfollow notification," so let's go through what Instagram actually shows.
What the other person CAN see
- Your follower count changing — if they check your profile, the follower number will simply be one lower, with no indication of who left
- You disappearing from their followers list — if they look at their own followers list, your name will no longer be on it
- Loss of access to private content — if their account is private and you unfollow, you'll lose access to their posts (and they could notice your engagement stop)
What they CANNOT see
- A direct notification saying "X unfollowed you"
- A timestamp of exactly when you unfollowed
- Any kind of unfollow "history" inside the app
Does this apply to Close Friends or Stories too?
Removing someone from your Close Friends list is also silent — no notification is sent. The same applies to unfollowing someone's Story-only access; Instagram simply updates the visibility lists in the background without alerting anyone.
